ArtSpan 2017 Exhibition at SOMArts - Part 2

Continuing my efforts as the Pretend Curator, -  during my time as a gallery representative at the San Francisco Open Studios Exhibition at SOMArts, I play the Pretend Curator game.  I group disparate pieces into my selected theme.  Imagine these pieces arranged on a large wall or around your home.  Sure to be a conversation starter!
Theme Number Two: Political
Some of the pieces are making an obvious political/social justice statement. For others,  I am using my imagination to make it fit into this category.

"609459 Troll 120715 3"  2013
Zoe Ani
encaustic on wood

"Resist"  2017
Mark Harris
mixed media on panel

"We Lived Happily During theWar"  2017
Lexie Bouwsma
ink, gouache, and pen on paper

"Quasar"  2017
Amy Ahlstrom
silk and cotton quilt
I am not sure if the artist's intention was to be political but my imagination says "maybe".  It is a beautiful piece nevertheless.

"Erasure 1"  2017
Priscilla Otani
mixed media painting
I see the profile of Hillary Clinton but I don't know what the Hershey chocolate bar wrappers have to do with this.  And that's ok, I like that I don't know.  It is interesting.

"Premium Arctic Ice"  2017
Alan Hopkins
mixed media
The title had Arctic and Ice in it so I immediately thought about global warming.  It is difficult to see the details in this image.

"Untitled"  2017
Dolores R. Gray
mixed media, acrylic
This beautiful piece may not have to do with global warming but that's where my mind goes.

"Not My President"  2017
Marti McKee
printmaking/mixed media

"Seeking Identity"  2017
Maja Planinac
photography
A very powerful image, two women (?), facing away from each other grappling with their sexuality?
Their shame?  Their invisibility?

"Upright and Steady"  2017
Leah Jachimowicz
mixed media, painting, letterpress collage
I made a poster  for one of the local marches that read "Thank you Donald for waking us up".  I see "rising" or activism rising out of the ashes of the 2016 election.

"Bots, Quotes, and Big Mouths"  2017
Katherine Hisako Kodama
oil and beeswax on panel
I included one of mine, but I put it last and made it smaller than the other images as penance.
Next theme: Strong Women
All the pieces are on display through November 12, 2017 at SOMArts, 934 Brannan St., San Francisco.
