ArtSpan has been actively promoting the work of its members by finding appropriate venues to showcase their art. Currently, there are 5 calls for art, one of which I did apply to. Because of the nature of my work, quiet, contemplative, it isn't always appropriate for a space. For example, I don't think work from my "Quiet" series would work in a noisy bar. However, I decided to apply to the
Hotel Adagio exhibition because the work would go into their "elegant lobby and bar areas". I submitted 5 pieces (maximum) and they are looking for medium to large sized works, although there was no mention as to what that meant. There is no cost for submission but you have to be a current member of Artspan. Take advantage of the
early bird special and join now (through May 31).

Adjusting the colors of "Tatjana" was problematic - this image does not show the subtleties of the oranges and reds.

I would like to see local businesses take advantage of their wall spaces to show local art. I know there is effort and a time commitment but perhaps our mayor, Mr. Ed Lee, could set aside money to compensate the venues. The artists would have opportunities to show their work, and the businesses would have fresh art rotating on a quarterly basis. It is a hassle for the businesses to organize, clean up and hang the work but if the artist could hang their work and an "art team" would prepare the walls before and after, wouldn't that make San Francisco a more interesting and vibrant place?
