Iceland Day 12

Godafoss, outsider art, Akureyri, Chinese food, fishing village

I continued to be amazed by the number and spectacularness of the waterfalls.  Here is another waterfall on the Ring Road named Godafoss (waterfall of the Gods).

Safnasafnid The Folk and Outsider Art Museum

Located just before reaching Akureyri, we popped in to see the work.  Outsider art typically is defined as art produced by self-taught artists who are not part of the artistic establishment.  I enjoyed the work and was particularly impressed with the notebooks and sketches.

this was part of a reconstructed yarn shop exhibit
the view from the cafe - we did enjoy a lovely cup of coffee

some of the denizens...

An interesting feature of this museum is that they rent out an apartment which looked quite charming and comfortable.

Continuing with our visit to the North, we stopped in Akureyri, aka the "Capital of the North" and saw shops we weren't interested in looking at.  We saw the cathedral and unfortunately, the art museum was closed on this day.
The highlight was having lunch at a Chinese restaurant - it has been my goal to eat in a Chinese restaurant in every country I visit.  It amazes me that you can always find one.  And, I enjoyed my meal - I was dying for some rice!

Siglufjordur - a picturesque town with an busy harbor (busy for Iceland that is).  I was fascinated with the fish catch.

the fish looked so fresh - check out their eyes!

We stopped in at the Herring Era Museum which is spread across three buildings.  It was very informative and spoke about overfishing in the 1900s, decimating the herring population.

Continuing our drive Eastward, we saw this island...was it Malmey?

We reached our accomodation, Hofsstadir Guesthouse which looked promising but yet again, there was construction going on.  The accomodations were new and I wondered if the proprietors were also new at this business.  One seemed to be trying very hard and the other seemed grumpy, like Basil Fawlty of Fawlty Towers.  The rooms were clean but very small.  One bright spot was there was comfortable seating right outside our door.
There was this interesting turf/underground building.

The views were magnificient.

A short stroll brought us to this church.

Our trusty bottle of whiskey that lasted us till today.  It was the first purchase after arriving at the airport in the duty free shop.  We usually had a drink in our hotel room in the evening and if our accommodation had outdoor seating, that's where we would be with our tumbler of Black Bush.

And while enjoying a drink in the on site restaurant, we were treated to this view...
