A War on Modern Art
Another "must see" show coming to the Cantor Arts Center...
Through February 24, 2013
Marie Stauffer Sigall Gallery
In 1937, Adolf Hitler and his Nazi regime viewed modernist artists as insane and threatening to their ideals. They presented the Entartete Kunst (Degenerate Art) exhibition in Munich, hoping to turn public opinion against all modern art. Explore works by several of these "degenerate" artists as we mark the 75th anniversary of the exhibition's opening. 18 works on display.
I remember studying about this terrible time in Western Art History with Professor Diana Scott at City College of San Francisco. She made art history so captivating that I considered going to graduate school to focus on art history. The humiliation brought on by the Nazis destroyed artists' lives and some committed suicide. They considered all modern art to be degenerate and mounted a show called "Degenerate Art" which hung the work chaotically, with text deriding the work. Many of my favorite artists will be on display including Otto Dix, Oskar Kokoschka and Max Beckmann.
The Cantor Art Center is located on the Stanford campus. It is a beautiful museum with the Andrew Goldsworthy "Stone River" piece just past the parking lot. And no visit is complete without a visit to the outdoor Rodin sculpture garden. Did I mention that admission the the Center is free?
