Bacterial cellulose in fashion
Now at the Science Museum on London - Trash Fashion: Designing out waste
Creating fashion from bacterial cellulose?! I am always interested in alternative materials to create art and here is an example of a natural material (cellulose) which is usually harvested from plants (like cotton), was created by bacteria in a sweetened green tea medium. Before you think "ewwww", remember that many wonderful products come from microbial fermentation like yogurt, kefir, wine, beer, natto...ok very few people actually like natto but a few of us like this healthy and fragrant fermented product. Very yummy over freshly cooked white rice but i digress....
The bacterial cellulose is pliable when wet but i wonder what it feels like when it is fully dry? Is it still malleable? Is it brittle? Does it have an odor? I may have to grow my own in the studio to answer these questions.
