Cezanne and American Modernism show

Some of my favorite images from the Cezanne and American Modernism show in Phoenix. It was one of the most enjoyable shows not just because there were 16 Cezanne paintings but the curators brought together a compelling story about how artists were influenced by Cezanne. Some surprises were Man Ray - who knew he could paint? And a pleasant surprise to see 3 beautiful Ashile Gorky paintings. Because Blogger makes it very difficult to line up text with the images, i might not bother for most of them but here are the paintings, some by Cezanne and others by inspired painters.

Cezanne - Still Life

Jozef Bakos "Still Life" Note the reference to Mt St. Victoire.

Patrick Henry Bruce "Landscape"
Love the muted colors.

Andrew Dusburg "Judson Smith"
This portrait seems very contemporary from the way it was painted to the the way Judson looks.

These next three paintings, so sensitively painted and the painter was obviously inspired by Cezanne but put his own touch are done by none other than Ashile Gorky.
"Staten Island"

Portrait of Helen

"Still Life"

Leon Kroll "Two Rivers"

Morgan Russell's apples - i love the dark outline and his treatment of the light.

Hale Woodruff "Normandy Landscape"
