Spark Program

I met with a representative from the Spark program last Friday. Spark inspires middle-school youth to pursue their
interests, create bonds with their communities, and develop a lifelong passion for learning. To accomplish this mission, Spark operates summer and after-school programs that match students with apprenticeships in professions of their choice at local workplaces.
I've mentored students when i was working for a biotechnology company in my previous incarnation and really enjoyed it. However, that program had students who were high achievers, the cream of the crop from San Mateo High School. In the Spark Program, many of the students are at-risk and therefore would be a different challenge. I am glad such a program exists. They have matched 425 students with mentors so far. My commitment as a mentor will be to meet with one student for 6 weeks and i will expose him/her to what i do as a painter. And it just so happens that the SF Chornicle has an article by Jill Tucker about the Spark Program in today's edition - you can find it here.
It sounds like i will be linked up with a student from Denman Middle School, which is close to my studio. I will have to be trained and fingerprinted having passed the screening process. If anyone out there is interested in becoming a mentor, please contact Spark.
