Day 6 Washington DC
National Museum of American History, Jefferson Memorial, FDR Memorial, Hirshhorn, National Museum of Women Artists
I was disappointed with the Museum of American History because the exhibits were cramped considering the wonderfully large space they have. The interpretive displays were not interesting and not easy to read. In addition, the emphasis seemed to be on the history of war which i guess is accurate. The highlights were the Star Spangled Banner, Julia Child's kitchen, and Picturing Words, an exhibit about book illustration. The banner was huge - i had no idea. Julia's kichen was wonderful with her tools and great videos with interviews and clips of her many television shows. The First Ladies inaugural gowns exhibit was a little disappointing because I was hoping to see Michele Obama's dress and it wasn't there. In fact, there weren't as many contemporary gowns as i would have hoped. We had a quick lunch and went to see the Jefferson and FDR Memorial. It was a beautiful walk to the Jefferson Memorial. There was a cool breeze and i sat there enjoying the calmness and reading his words. There was a clear and direct view of the White House from the Jefferson Memorial. We continued our walk to the FDR Memorial which was a much more interpretive memorial in that quotes were scattered about in different parts of the stoned water features mixed with bronze sculptures. The settings was peaceful, more park like than stark memorial (like the WWII Memorial)
We returned to the Hirshhorn to finish seeing their permanent collection. And then, the final museum of the trip, the National Museum of Women in the Arts is the only museum in the world dedicated exclusively to recognizing the contributions of women artists.
There was Mary McFadden: Goddesses exhibition which i thoroughly enjoyed.
I was exhausted after 6 days of walking and museum and memorial visiting!
