Day 5 Washington DC

Georgetown, Phillips Collection
We went to Georgetown via the DC Circulator, walked around and noticed the beautiful homes. Walked to Dupont Circle and along Embassy Row to the Phillips Collection. The collection was unbelievable!

The art is housed in Phillip's boyhood home(with subsequent additions), and this world-class collection of nearly 3,000 works of modern and contemporary art is worth the extra trouble to visit. Take the Metro and get off at Dupont Circle station - it isn't that much more trouble. I hyperventilated when i read that there was a "Rothko" room.

In the Entry way, we were greeted by the work of Willem de Looper

And saw works by recognizibly famous artist....

The current exhibition "Paint Made Flesh" was so enjoyable - i fell in love with a deKooning nude and i am not a deKooning fan. Excellent show - i bought a little catalog and a t-shirt.
The Rothko Room
It was wonderful to see the paintings but the room was very dark - these images have distorted the colors. And the room was very small and apparently, this was the way Rothko intended the paintings to be displayed. I wanted to see the subtle colors but couldn't because it was so dark. I stayed in there for a while and then had to return after lunch to take in the work before leaving.
