Open Call for Artists

OPEN CALL FOR ARTISTS:
FAMILY PICTURES Exhibition at Gallery 3175, ROOT DIVISION
Exhibition Dates: July 8 - 25, 2009
Curator: Michelle Townsend

Deadline for submission: May 11, 2009

Root Division invites artists working in all genres to submit work for Family Pictures, an exhibition examining the concept of family in its broadest sense, exploring relationships, shared memories, domestic life, and our evolving ties to those we hold close. Family relationships--or those that approximate them—will serve as subject, inspiration, and governing theme for artwork in a variety of media.
From the Curator:
For many of us, the Bay Area is our adopted home. We are transplants here, having arrived in pursuit of paths that require us to move away from our places of birth and the families into which we were born. As our lives evolve, we build friendships. We find partners. We have our own children. We split up and readjust. The concept of “family” becomes a flexible, multi-faceted idea that incorporates our blood relatives and the assortment of people who play familial roles in our lives. Whether our family dynamics resemble the generations that came before, or are shaped by the uniquely modern forces that propel us to migrate, and enable us to marry whom we choose, the topic of family is fertile soil for contemporary artists.
