Museum Day

Happy Valentine's Day!
The day was spent doing "arty" things like taking a docent led tour at the SFMOMA with the theme "What's love got to do with it". I was reminded how wonderful it is to take a tour with a knowledgeable person who is able to make us think deeply about the art by asking thought provoking questions. We looked at 3 groupings. The first included one painting by Diego Rivera and next to it, one by Frida Kahlo. The second grouping was an Arthur Dove painting and a Helen Torr painting and the last grouping was works by Jasper Johns and Robert Rauschenberg. They were all couples and our docent asked us questions to help us think about the paintings and engaged us by analyzing these works of art. Our docent, Dan Kilpatrick, i must admit, is a friend and member of our artists' group that meets once a month in my studio. So, i already knew it was going to be a great tour. He has been a docent for over 25 years and his experience, depth of knowledge, ability to engage the audience and his beautiful speaking voice made it a worthwhile and enjoyable experience. After the tour, we looked at the SECA award winners before heading to see Gay Outlaw's work at Paule Anglim. Kenneth Baker reviewed the work in the SF Chronicle here. Regarding the SECA artists (i won't say which one)- sometimes i find the concept is much more worthy than the actual visual piece - perhaps that's enough?
We headed to the Asian Art Musuem for lunch - i think they have the best food out of all the museums in SF and had a look around. They are in between shows but i always like looking at the Japanese art permanent collection. And finally, a quick tour of the SF Main Library. There have been a few changes since the last time i was there but i am reminded that i need to use this valuable resource more.
