ArtSpan mixer and new Golden product
I went to an ArtSpan mixer at Dick Blick's Art Store on Van Ness Avenue this evening. The ArtSpan people really make the effort to get artists interested in Open Studios which by the way is happening in October. There was catered food from Triptych and a demonstration of a new Golden acrylic paint product called Open.
This new product remains wet for longer allowing for easier blending and is available in 40 traditional colors.
I occassionally work in acrylic but i know how to work with them without using Open. I keep my paints moist by soaking white paper on top of a flat sponge that is wet. I have to minimize the amount of mixing i can do on the paper because the paper will tear but i mix on a palette and then place the mixed color onto the wet paper. The paint remains workable for up to 2 months! No kidding - but it will get moldy so change the paper. Spritzing it helps to prevent any large blobs of paint from hardening on the surface. Also, using media (like soft gel) mixed with the paint helps to keep the paint workable. But i love working oils more.
Triptych also has rotating art in their restaurant.
From their website:
Triptych offers an exceptional space in San Francisco's eclectic SoMA district for artists to show their work. The corrugated steel walls add an industrial quality to offset the artwork. Artists that are interested in having an exhibit at Triptych should contact David at 415.703.0557 to discuss the rotating schedule.
