8 Principles of Renaissance Thinking and The Dump

I find yet again, Robert Genn's words to be inspiring in a world when sometimes, i feel the goal of many artists is to be famous, not better artists.
8 Principles of Renaissance Thinking
Curiosity as a way of thinking
Suspicion of authority and conventional wisdom
Respect for intelligently filtered history
Aspiration to higher levels of achievement
Vision for renewed potential in all things
Tendency to invent private systems
Reinvention and perfection of former skills
Accepting the challenge of the difficult

I took another trip to The Dump on Saturday but this time i wanted to share this fascinating experience with my husband. We didn't go to one of the more interesting parts of the tour which is a trip to Pier 96 where all the recyclables go but i think he still thought it was worth it. It's made me think about how to reduce the amount of garbage i generate. Since we in San Francisco are so lucky that we have compostable material pickup, there is no reason to have any smelly garbage since all that could go into the compost bin. That is one very noticeable thing about the transfer station... it is full of stuff that could be either recycled or composted. I think everyone should be required to go on this tour to appreciate the tremendous amount of garbage we generate. You need to reserve a spot by calling Deborah Munk at 415-330-1415. The tour is given on every third Saturday of each month at 10 am. Children under 9 years old are prohibited from attending as a safety precaution.
Reduce, Recycle and Rot the garbage. Think that it is a necessity, not a choice.

The hazardous waste disposal site - everyone working there is super nice and you can get free house paint in limited colors.

Where does all this plastic go? To Asia...
