SF Recycling Center
I went on a tour of the SF Recycling Center yesterday just because i am interested in where all the garbage, the recyclables and organic waste goes. It was absolutely fascinating!
This is where the garbage from the black bin goes. It doesn't get sorted out and unfortunately, i saw a lot of recyclable material. All this will go to landfill someplace in Livermore.
Outside, there are large containers filled with household debris some of which gets recycled into their components for recycling like metal. Some of the things that are in good shape are sent to Goodwill.
There are electronic components, flourescent tubes, and hazardous waste that get collected here, at no cost to the homeowner (within limits).
And this is what a ton of paper looks like, ready to be recycled.
We then took a car ride to Pier 96 where the recycling is done. There is a huge city owned warehouse that contains this incredible operation, with conveyer belts rushing around and workers handpicking the contaminants from the line. Unfortunately, we weren't able to take photographs.
There was a lot of information, an interesting video and so much to see that i can't remember most of the details. That is why i am going again in July!
Check out the Artist in Residence program.
