Frida Kahlo

The long awaited Frida Kahlo show at SFMOMA is opening June 14th and will run through September 28, 2008. As a member of SFMOMA, i was able to go to a preview on Thursday which i find is the most valuable perk of being a member. On preview days there are no crowds, the people who go on those days really want to see the art (opposed to the ones that aren't used to being in a musuem and have trouble navigating space, being aware of others, using their cell phones, are busy socializing and not looking at the art - and yes i know it is great they are there just not at the same time i am), and because it is before a blockbuster show starts, the cafeteria is calm. I think it is going to be well attended because SFMOMA will be having times entrances which seems unusual for a show.

I like Kahlo's imagery and the her folk style of painting. It isn't something that inspires me as a painter like the work of Brice Marden but i am glad to have seen the work. I think viewers respond to her pain and suffering from her spinal injuries and from her relationship with Diego Rivera. The work seems very contemporary to me but that maybe because she has influenced many artists.
