Air Pollution
The ten most polluted (year round particle pollution) cities in the US are:
Los Angeles, CA
Bakersfield, CA
Visalia, CA
Houston, TX
Fresno, CA
Sacramento, CA
Dallas, TX
New York City, NY
Washington D.C./Baltimore, MD
Baton Rouge
(yay, San Francisco is not on the list but 50% of the cities listed are in California!)
Which reminds me how as artists, we work with toxic materials, breathe in all manner of harmful dust and some of us work on top of a Superfund site, Hunters Point Shipyards, for example. It is up to each individual to be aware of the potential for health risks. When i worked in biotechnology, we were subjected to annual exams to test hearing, exposure to certain materials, lung capacity, radioactivity (back in the day when radioactivity was used in the lab), and other tests i no longer remember. The tests were done to limit any liability of course, but the company had a vested interest in their employees as well. Working independently means we have to be cognizant of the risks and to think about our long term health.
