The Francisco Studios artist met today to start organizing our spring show to be held May 2 with a Friday night reception and May 3, an all day, relaxed open house. It looks like 12 artists will be participating! It should be an interesting time as i will be returning from Chicago April 28th and might not have many paintings to show if i am bringing most of them to Chicago!

As a microcosm of American art history, the story of the Rocky Neck Art Colony covers the sweeping changes in the evolution of painting, and many of the major participants. Almost every American artist of note has painted on Rocky Neck at some point in his or her career. Fitz Henry Lane was the first to capture the genre of the day—sail, schooner, and the hardy Gloucester fisherman. Many others followed including Winslow Homer, Maurice Prendergast, John Sloan, Frank Duveneck, Frederick Mulhaupt, Theresa Bernstein, William Meyerowitz, Milton Avery, Cecilia Beaux, Stuart Davis, Adolph Gottleib, Hans Hoffmann, Mark Rothko, and others.
The story of Rocky Neck is the story of the dichotomy of Gloucester: a working class town, where hardy fisherman rubbed shoulders with bohemians, and each group accepted the other without rancor. In many cases, the fishermen of the Gloucester fleet provided a constant source of subject matter for the artists, who loved nothing more than capturing the light and heart of Gloucester through the expert use of color, brush, and canvas.
