Louise Nevelson at the de Young.

I went to the Louise Nevelson show at the de Young Museum last Friday. I was given the catalog to the show, a handsome, hard bound book with good reproductions of her work so i had a good idea of what to expect. However, i didn't expect to like the work so much more in person. She used found wood objects to create her sculptures. She painted her pieces either black, white or gold which for me gave the feeling of a color field in 3D. It was especially obvious in "Sky Cathedral/Southern Mountain". Her lithographs inspired me to rethink my line project for the next Playgroup meeting. The show ended today.
Following the Nevelson show was the Diane and Sandy Besser Collection which included an interesting mix of media. The teapot part of the show was pretty amazing and i was glad to see that one of my favorite professors from the San Francisco Art Institute, John de Fazio had his piece "Dante's Inferno"in the show. An exquisite charcoal drawing by Ira Korment called "Furth" is what i want to accomplish when i do charcoal drawings. Peter Howson created a wonderful expression in his "Prickis". Also part of the collection was African bead work using glass and cowrie shells to make cache sexe (garments to cover the pubic area), bodices, hats and other garments.
